The Internet has revolutionized the way people connect with each other. This wide network of interconnected computers has ramifications not only in the field of business, but also in the personal lives of people. Connecting with a friend, family member or a customer who is sitting half way across the globe is as simple clicking the mouse button.

Obviously, as Internet becomes important for people, marketing, advertising and business promotion is also deeply influenced by it. Internet Marketing, or the marketing of products and services over the Internet, has become one of the essential marketing techniques for any business to succeed.

Internet Marketing is also called online marketing. Internet Marketing is much more than merely building a website and occupying a space online. There are other strategies that are equally important, and which must run parallel to advertising via a website.
Some important Internet Marketing concepts are explained below:

Blogging

A blog or a weblog is a website that is updated on a regular basis. It is often used by companies to engage with customers and explain their products and services. Many blogs are updated weekly, some are updated even daily. If a blog features interesting posts, it is a good way of attracting customers and building a reputation.

Search Engine Marketing

Google, Yahoo, Bing, Jeeves, Ask.com etc. are popular search engines that prospective customers use to find out information about products or services that they are interested in. A large majority of people use the search engine to locate relevant websites to buy or compare products that they are interested in. It is therefore in the best interest of any business to be prominently visible in search results. Contextual ads, paid per click ads, Search Engine Optimization etc. are used to ensure that the website gets a high rank in the search result.

Social Media Marketing

This is the age of Social Media. If you haven’t heard of Facebook, YouTube, Flickr or Twitter, you have a lot of catching up to do. Social networks, blogs, wikis or online knowledge banks, online communities etc. are watering holes of the Internet. People gather here to discuss things that are of interest to them. Social Media Marketing can help engage with select customer groups that have high potential of converting.

Email Marketing

Here, email is used to communicate with customers. Emails help strengthen business relationships and also enhance customer loyalty. Properly paced, informative emails can help acquire new customers by providing information that is useful for them.

Affiliate Marketing

This is a kind of marketing where others, or affiliates, bring in business for you. You reward the affiliate for each customer or visitor it brings to you.

Internet marketing costs only a fraction of traditional marketing but it reaches a wide audience. It brings about results quickly because customers are able to research and buy products and services at their convenience; you just need to be available to them when they make the buying decision. Internet marketing campaigns are also easy to track, measure and monitor. Therefore, it is also easy to identify where improvements are needed.

Internet marketing is something that no business can afford to ignore anymore. Using the many strategies explained above, marketing of your business online can be done in a way that will give maximum results.

Twitter was launched in the year 2006 and ever since, this platform where your message is limited to just 140 characters, has grown exponentially and has found users all over the world. The primary attraction of Twitter is that it enables people to stay in touch and share information with each other in real time.

Once an individual or a business joins Twitter, the first step would be to connect with others who share similar interests or are in related fields. You would also need to find topics that interest you and be part of tweets that discuss or provide information on these topics.
Twitter provides their own search tool to find people and companies.

It also uses “Hasthtags” to group topics into categories that can be searched and revisited later. Hashtags make it easy to find tweets that are relevant to a particular topic or category and also filter out non-relevant ones. You can make a twitter hashtag quite easily – just add a pound sign (#) before the keyword that you think might be relevant enough to be a category on its own.

Hashtags are driven by the Twitter users themselves. It serves as a handy tool to provide relevant context and more information via tweets. If somebody talks about Windows OS, for example, they might add a reference #microsoft to provide more relevance and related info that others can explore further.

If you are looking for specific information about a product or say an event that happened recently, hashtags can be an effective way of getting the relevant tweets out of Twitter. When you tweet with a hashtag, your followers also know that you are tweeting about a particular topic just by looking at your tweet stream.

Many users tend to use hashtags indiscriminately. While there is no harm in prefixing the # sign in front of a word you think is important for you, it is much more beneficial if hashtags are used only for words that have a much wider relevance. Don’t overload each tweet with hashtags. Try and use them sparingly, just one in a tweet or perhaps two. Never use more than three.

There are two different ways of using hashtags. Some use it as part of the tweet itself while others append the hashtags at the end of the tweet. Both achieve the same result, it is up to you how you want to use it. But tag only those tweets that add significant value to the discussion, else it will not be long before the community writes you off as either a spammer or as a non-serious user.

Twitter hashtags serve as a very important tool to organize and coordinate updates about events. Each tweet about the event will carry the hashtag and it helps keep track of all the tweets about this event.

Using hashtags is a great way to extend your presence and influence on Twitter. It can significantly strengthen your credibility in the community. By using hashtags appropriately and selectively, you come across as a serious professional.

If you tweet about a topic that is currently generating a lot of interest, make sure that you use the word in a hashtag. Twitter users generally search for tweets that come from users all over, hashtags is a great way for them to discover your tweets.

Social Media marketing is a great way to establish a strong online presence, and many businesses are able to successfully leverage this amazing tool that does not differentiate between the haves and have-nots. Even a small, one Man Company is empowered and can have access to the sophisticated technology that makes it possible to create an indelible impression in the social media community.

If you look around, you will see “experts” everywhere in social media. In fact, one of the preferred means of creating a formidable and credible presence in this platform is by establishing your expertise. While this may seem to be a great way to attract followers and promote your brand to them, you have to be very careful about what you say and what you project yourself to be, because anything that you fake will be out sooner or later.

Take a hint from how quickly news of celebrity indiscretions spread. If you lie about something, you will be caught, and the world will hear about it. And once you are caught lying, the community will brand you as a fake and reject you altogether. This is definitely not something that you want or can afford to have.

It is very easy to project yourself as an expert in social media. It is possible to create the illusion that you know what you are talking about. You can also show that you have the qualifications, expertise and experience to back up that claim. However, if you are not truthful about this assertion, sooner or later people will catch on.

Social media is like a double edged sword. It is a powerful vehicle for information. It is the very same power that you leverage to spread a positive online image that can cause negative vibes also to spread like wild fire. When a business enters the social media arena, it is absolutely vital that everyone involved in the company understands the raw power of this platform and the kind of impact it can create. If they do not bother, or if they are not completely honest about whom they really are, the truth will out, eventually. All it takes is one person to suspect the genuineness and honesty and spread the word; if there is some truth behind this suspicion, your reputation can be tarnished to a great extent.

Right now, in this age, what matters is how transparent you are. Why there is such a premium on transparency is because it is just so easy to find information these days. It is just not possible to hide anything anymore. Think about it. Just 20 years back, to find out specific information about anything, say a disease or a management concept or a new fad, you would have had to go to the library, pore over books and talk to experts. Right now, all you need to do is to just Google it.

For companies who have an active presence in social media, or who are thinking about wetting their feet, one word of advice: do not even bother pretending to be someone that you are not. Eventually, the real you will come out and you will be exposed. Once you are exposed and the community ousts you, it is extraordinarily difficult to regain your reputation.

It is not unusual to come across a website which may look good with a particular browser, a couple of operating systems and at a specific screen resolution, but once the browser and/or the screen resolution changes the entire page looks unattractive and even the text may look unreadable. This disaster comes about mainly because web designers sometimes succumb to the lure of easy web designing via software tools that claim to generate pages for you within a few seconds. But the truth is, unless a web designer uses all the creativity and technical skills that he has at his disposal, websites that look good regardless of operating system, browser or screen resolution, are almost impossible to design.

It is important to remember that websites exist almost always for a reason – the most important being selling products and services online or just for branding. If the page is not visible, as it is meant to be, for a significant chunk of the visitors, the website does not achieve intended results.

There are certain things that web designers can do to make their websites better.

1. Never stuff the website with pictures

Pictures definitely enhance the look and feel of the webpage and they also communicate without having to use a ton of text. Nonetheless, you are well advised to be moderate or even conservative when using huge image files in the webpage. Cramming it with many pictures causes the webpage to load slowly and the net-surfers may lose interest in your website by then. Remember that if a page takes more than 5 seconds to load, a visitor may lose patience and surf away from your site. Keep in mind the short attention span and the level of patience that an average visitor has when designing the pages.

2. Use fancy fonts and pop-ups wisely

Even if you use fancy fonts, if the visitor does not have those fonts installed in his or her machine, they may be rendered as plain fonts on their screens. Stick to normal, easy to read fonts like Verdana, Arial, Tahoma etc. If you absolutely must use the new fancy font, try and put them in an image. Also, do not clutter the user’s screen with annoying pop ups that they have no control over. A new browser window or a pop up must be created only with the user’s permission.

3. Functionality before aesthetics

A good website must be visually appealing as well as functional. If you absolutely must choose between the two, choose functionality over anything else. A very attractive page which is not easy to understand and not functional, just will not cut it. No amount of attractiveness can make up for lack of functionality.

4. Avoid Fancy Elements

You might have seen web pages where all the text and images look the same, there are no hyperlinks whatsoever, at least none that are visible. Unless your mouse hovers over an image or a particular phrase it will not show as a hyperlink. This is cumbersome and quite annoying to surfers who are spoilt for choice and are not really dying to uncover the mysteries that you may have buried in the clever design.

5. Keep browser specific functions to a minimum

When you have many browser specific elements incorporated into a page, remember that not all visitors to your site will be using that particular browser. So while the page may look fantastic and have many important functionality that can be accessed by one browser, users who favor other browsers may be left in a lurch. The important thing to keep in mind is that the Internet is a vast space and there are thousands of competitors with friendlier websites out there. Cater to the requirements of visitors rather than to that of browsers.

The above tips, though not exhaustive, will go a long way in creating web pages that have a good balance of visual appeal and functionality.

The Internet is perhaps one of the most significant means of communication of all times. We use it for almost everything, not only to get information, but also for online shopping and connecting with people all over the world.

There are a lot of businesses who sell their products and services online; they connect with their customers through websites. Therefore it is important to make the website design attractive, functional, interesting and easy to understand so that more customers can be attracted and retained.

If the website is intended to market a product or service and to provide the facility to buy online, more importance must be given to functionality rather than just having a graphic-intensive page that is difficult to load. To create an impact, there are many things that must be considered while designing a website – the main objective of the website, how many pages it should have, what type of content should go in, how many images should be there in the web pages, the logo of the company and other aspects that are important to the business. Unless you have a good website with flawless content and a pleasing, easy to understand interface, there is a good chance that your customers might look elsewhere.

There are many reputed firms that offer web designing prices at affordable rates. A word of caution here – do not look at just the cost, there might be firms offering you websites at a fraction of cost of what others do, but do not skimp on quality in favor of low cost. There are many software tools that generate web pages within a matter of minutes, and these web pages may not work well in all the browsers or operating systems that the visitors have in their machines.

Even if you have great products and services it will not get noticed or get the deserved level of attention unless it is portrayed in an attractive manner, in a well designed website.

Very often websites fail because of poor web design. They fail to engage the user because the design was not done applying best practice web design principles.

There are certain guidelines that are set by the W3C or the World Wide Web Consortium. These standards ensure that websites look good and feel across a wide range of browsers, operating systems and devices. If you find that your website looks different in different browsers or operating systems, it is because it hasn’t been designed keeping with the web standards.

Following the web standards will not only ensure a consistent look and feel, but it will also help the pages load faster and it is also easier to maintain the website. These websites are also preferred by search engines, so it will get you a higher indexing and make it easier for the users to find you. The code is also easier to maintain.

The usability factor of a website plays an important role in how long visitors stay on a page or even interact by clicking on the links. A website with low usability will have a high bounce rate, ie. The rate at which visitors leave the page without doing anything on it. Usability involves how easy it is to understand, how efficient it is, the frequency and severity of errors and the satisfaction that users derive.

Easy navigation, provision of site maps, simple and easy to fill contact forms, search engine friendliness, use of colors, fonts, images, alignment etc. all play a part in how effectively the website is designed and how user friendly and attractive the final product is.
Always think from your visitor’s perspective and you will be able to gain a lot of insight into how well (or not) your website is designed.

Usually, the most simply deigned websites are the most successful. But it doesn’t mean that your website has to be boring. If you spend enough time with the structure, layout and other design aspects, you can get a great looking website which is also extremely functional and user friendly.

Social media, by its very nature, allows conversations between a business and its customers. It is unlike any other traditional medium that serves to only broadcast information to the public and lack the facility to receive feedback. Public opinion or feedback becomes apparent only weeks or months after an attempt at communication was established through the broadcast, typically a print or television ad or some other form of communication.

In social media, the feedback is almost instantaneous. And add to it the ability for an interesting piece of information to go viral; it reaches millions of people within a few hours. This is precisely the reason why social media must be handled with care. It is a very powerful tool, a weapon, if you will. Use it carefully; else you end up shooting your own foot.

Businesses form personal and deeper relationships with customers through social media platforms. While this sort of publicity is great when everything goes well and all is hunky-dory, if there is any negative aspect about the interaction, it can prove very harmful, if not fatal, to the business. That is, unless you handle it carefully and defuses the bomb.

Since social media is a two-way communication channel, along with positive interactions, you are also potentially opening the door for negative criticisms as well. Any business that ventures into the social media realm must also be fully prepared to handle negative feedback from customers, which will happen sooner or later. Unless handled with sensitivity and care, it can blow up into a publicity nightmare. Remember the story of David and Goliath? Just because you are a big company you are not immune to the critiques of a small number of customers.

To deal with negative feedback effectively, first you need to determine what type of feedback you have received. Is it a problem with the product or service? Is it constructive criticism where improvements are suggested to you by customers who care? Is the customer angrily attacking you, with reason? Or is it just a negative feedback for no reason, to show you in a bad light and possibly promote a competitor?

Once you have identified what type of feedback it is, you can take steps to address the issue.

Stay Positive.

Your customers have the privilege of being negative or angry. You, on the other hand, have to stay positive even when the feedback is more of a personal attack. If you react to a negative feedback with more negativity, it will only spiral down into an uncontrollable mess which will reflect poorly on your business and customer care. You will not only end up losing the customer, but a highly negative interaction could also turn viral and give you a lot of bad publicity. More often than not, an angry customer has a genuine problem with your product or service. Take steps to address it, if you cannot rectify it immediately, at least offer some respite, perhaps a partial refund etc.

If the problem can be fixed, fix it.

If the feedback is straightforward, for example a customer complains about a defect in the product, go ahead and address it directly. Fix the problem; let the customer know that the problem has been resolved. Remember that conversations in social media are rarely private; it is an open interaction happening right in front of many other people. Some, or many, of them are watching. When you fix a problem, you are not satisfying the customer who had a problem alone, but also those who are watching.

Thank customers for their suggestions.

Sometimes, a customer might come up with a brilliant suggestion that you just cannot wait to implement. But it is more likely that it cannot be implemented because it is not feasible. Nonetheless, a constructive criticism requires a positive response. Thank the customers who bothered to take some time out and provided you with suggestions that could improve your product or service.

Sometimes it is best to just ignore.

Trolling or spamming is no feedback. It is usually an attempt to draw you into a fight that will inevitably damage your reputation. Stay clear from such feedback, refuse to take the bait. Whenever it is appropriate, remove such feedback as soon as you spot it.

Promoting your work through social media marketing can be highly effective, but it does require patience and a different approach than other marketing channels. If you approach social media marketing as just another channel for promoting your products, you’ll fade quickly. Promotion via social media marketing is all about making connections and communicating with people on a personal level. It is generally more time-consuming than traditional marketing, and it requires you to build relationships with people one at a time.

People have to feel like you are one of them in order to spread your content in social media. So, rather than always talking about yourself, your aim should be to connect with people and help them out without expecting anything in return. Once people trust you and you are in with the crowd, you can start promoting your work occasionally. When you earn people’s respect, they will be more than willing to help you out.

In order to grow an audience for your content, you need to develop a home base, such as a website or blog. Make sure to link to your home base from all of your social networking profiles and from your email signature, so the people you meet on social networks can visit your home base to learn more about you and view your content. Having content to share via social media is a great way to find an audience on social media networks.

After you establish your main base and presence on various social media networks, you need to find your audience and reach out to them. Your audience consists of people who share similar interests, and who are talking about what you are talking about on social media. Next, you have to connect with your audience and you can do this by simply commenting. And don’t promote yourself in your comments either. Just leave thoughtful comments about people’s content and contribute to the conversation. Eventually, you’ll come to build a relationship with those people.

When promoting content, make sure that the content is helpful. People are more likely to read and spread the content if it is something that will help them do their job better. On the other hand, if you just talk about yourself in your content, it is far less likely to go viral. People are more willing to spread content that they can actually put to use. If you are trying to promote a product or service directly with social media marketing, make sure to target the right audience. The audience should actually be interested in the product or service you offer. That’s why it’s important to target the right audience from the very beginning. The social media following that you build should have lifestyles and interests that align with the products, services, or content that you’re going to promote.

Remember that there is no one-size-fits-all social media marketing campaign. What works for you may not work for others. However, as long as you remember to target the appropriate audience and are helpful and genuine in your interactions, you’re bound to achieve success with social media marketing.

One of the very first steps you have to take in order to optimize a website for search engines is on-site search engine optimization. When most people think of SEO, things like link-building, social bookmarking, and blog commenting come to mind, but they forget that one of the most integral components of a successful SEO campaign is on-site optimization. On-site optimization consists of taking steps to ensure that your website can be crawled and indexed properly by the search engines. HTML tags, keywords, internal links, and site structure all play an important role in on-site SEO.

To make it easier for search engines to crawl your website, create a sitemap that outlines and organizes the various pages of your website. An experienced SEO professional can also structure your site properly to ensure that it is crawlable and search engine-friendly.

The meta keywords, description, title, and H1 and H2 tags on each page of your site should contain target keywords because they tell search engines exactly what your website is about. Furthermore, description tag are what search engines use to market the content of your site in their search results, so make sure that the description tags you use are compelling enough to entice searchers to click on your site’s listings. Many SEO pros consider the title tag to be the most important aspect of on-site SEO because it is what search engines look at to determine what your page is about and it is what stands out and grabs (or fails to grab) the attention of site visitors.

Keyword research is an important aspect of on-site optimization, since all of the content on your website needs to be optimized with important keywords in your niche. You can improve your site’s search engine ranking and relevancy by including tons of interesting, well-written content that contains target keywords. Target approximately one to two keywords per page for optimal results, but feel free to pepper additional, related keywords throughout the content.

The words used in the first sentences of each page are highly important, not only because they grab visitors’ attention but also because the search engines judge what the rest of your content is about based on the words that the first sentence on each page contains. As such, make sure that the first sentences on each page of content include target keywords.

URLs are another important component of on-site SEO. Make sure that the subdirectory folder and page in the URL contain your target keywords. Your URLs are one of the factors search engines will consider when they judge the relevancy of each page of your website. If there images on your website, make sure to use ALT tags that contain target keywords. The file name of your images should also be optimized.

Linking is another factor to consider when you are doing on-site optimization. Make sure there are plenty of links throughout your website that lead to different pages within your site. The links should have anchor text that includes the keywords you’re targeting. For optimal results, internally link to each page of your site several times using a variety of related keyword phrases.

Mobile interactive advertising is beginning to play an increasingly important role in corporate advertising campaigns. The mobile advertising medium is highly effective as a channel for brand building, and as more and more consumers use their smartphones to access the internet and search for information, it has become essential for businesses in a broad range of industries to have a strong mobile presence.

Brands build and develop in the following five stages:

Consumers grow aware of your brand and remember your ads

Consumers recognize your advertising message and automatically associate it with your brand

Consumers develop feelings about your brand and compare it with competing brands

Consumers come to trust your brand and decide to purchase your product or take some other kind of action

Consumers purchase your product and develop brand loyalty, preferring your brand over others

The best practices of interactive advertising in mobile media are based on the above five stages. In order to appeal to consumers, build brand awareness, and achieve brand loyalty, your branding must be very clear, have consistent messaging, be relevant to your target audience’s needs, and give prospects a reason to choose your product over others. Moreover, your ads should develop their preference for your products over other similar products.

Designing a mobile advertising campaign can be a difficult process considering the size limitations there are. Nevertheless, many companies manage to develop successful mobile interactive advertising campaigns by focusing on one single message, even if it is executed in a variety of ways.
The use of mobile advertising in itself helps advertisers build a clearer brand image and stronger brand awareness. When people see advertising from a particular brand in a variety of mediums, such as online, on TV, in print, and on their mobile phones, they are more likely to develop brand awareness and trust.
Ads that perform the best in mobile advertising are highly targeted. Ads that target lifestyle attributes or specific demographics tend to do better in mobile advertising than general marketing campaigns. Due to the small advertising space that’s provided on mobile phones, ads have to be very relevant to the needs of users in order to get their attention and be successful.

Giving consumers a good reason for why they should buy your products can be tricky, particularly in tough economic times when money is tight. However, as long as your branding is clear, your message is consistent, and you build a campaign with multiple interactive elements, then your products are likely to sell. Once your prospects purchase what you have to offer, they will develop a preference for your brand as long as you continue the conversation. For example, you can follow up with your customers by developing a useful mobile website or sending them coupons. It’s essential to highlight the benefits of buying from you to encourage your customers to come back for more.

In mobile advertising, just as in traditional online interactive advertising, it is important to mix up the types of ads you use because people get tired of seeing the same ads over and over. Better yet, build mobile interactive advertising campaigns that consist of a variety of elements. For example, in a textual ad campaign, you could incorporate elements such as downloadable applications and branded ringtones. Just remember to keep the ad messaging consistent in order to build a strong mobile brand and successful mobile interactive advertising campaign.

This is a guest post from Kathleen O’Connor, a web copywriter and SEO copywriter.
Writing copy that gets people to buy isn’t the tough part. The tough part is writing copy that gets people to buy NOW.

Scarcity is the tactic that copywriters use to make people feel like they have to buy whatever it is you’re selling right at this very moment.

When you use scarcity the right way, you create the perception that your product is going to run out, which lights a fire under your prospects’ butts.

If you don’t use scarcity, your prospects will read about your offer and tell themselves that they can put it off till later. But then, later never comes. That’s why any time you write a sales page for an offer on your website, you need to create a sense of urgency somehow.

Here are some ideas on how you can do it:

-If your offer is service-based, only offer it to a limited number of clients. For example, you can offer 10 website audits, logo designs, or consultations when you launch your offer.

Example: Book your marketing consultation today – there are only 4 slots left!

-Have a sale. Holding a sale is a tried-and-true way to create urgency. You can put a deadline on the sale, but it’s not always necessary because when you have a sale, it generally implies that it’s going to go away at some point, even if you don’t say so explicitly.

Example: On sale now – buy two pizzas for the price of one

-Offer your product for a limited time only and then take it off the market. But be sure to keep your word and take the product off the market when you said you would. Otherwise, people will stop taking you seriously.

Example: Sign up for our membership program now – we’re closing the doors to this life-changing program on March 15th!

-Sweeten the deal by adding a freebie to your offer. You know how they always give you extra goodies on those TV infomercials? Well, you can do the same on your website. Add an extra or two to your offer to sweeten the deal and you’ll boost sales.

Example: Buy our 3-day Puerto Vallarta vacation package and get 2 opera ticket and a spa treatment of your choice, FREE!

-Run a one-man/one-woman service-based operation? If you get fully booked, don’t take down your services page. Instead, tell people that you’re fully booked and let them know when you’ll be taking on new clients. If people think you’re uber-busy and always booked, they’ll want to hire you even more. It’s funny, that.

Example: We are fully booked until September 2010. Please contact us if you’d like to sign up for our waiting list.

So, what’s stopping you from using scarcity in your website copy?

Scarcity works because it gives people a reason to buy from you now rather than later. If you don’t use scarcity, your prospects will put off their purchase and then quickly forget about your offer.

Don’t let that happen. Use scarcity tactics in your web copywriting to ensure that your prospects buy from you rather than one of your competitors.

But don’t create a false illusion of scarcity. If you lie to people and they find out about it, they’ll lose trust in your business and your credibility will take a beating.

Do you have an underperforming sales page on your website? Are you unsure of how you can create a sense of urgency in your web copy? Share your problem in the comments, and I’ll see if I can lend you a hand!
